About Scripps Ranch
Scripps Ranch was originally a 400 acre (1.6 km) ranch purchased by Ellen Browning Scripps for $5,000. Her half-brother, newspaper man E. W. Scripps eventually acquired 2,100 acres (8.5 km) on which to build his winter home where he believed that the dry climate would keep him healthy. The Scripps Ranch Civic Association provides a more complete history. During the late 1970s the Ranch was sold to developers who built an upscale community of ranch style homes, over 300 of which were burned in the Cedar Fire in 2003. About 50% of these homes have been rebuilt and the original residents have returned.
In the 1990's Scripps Ranch Villages, a planned community north of old Scripps Ranch or for reference, Spring Canyon Road was added. It brought many more people to the area. In the late 1990's a northwestern side was added. Both areas are distinguished by their mostly two-story homes that have common paint schemes and CC&Rs that restrict homeowners on everything from their front yard designs to parking regulations. This makes for a neighborhood where it is hard to tell one home from the next but also one where you don't have to worry about your neighbor storing junk autos in their backyard.
Scripps Ranch Villages is anchored by a shopping center which includes Vons, several small service stores, North Island Credit Union, Wells Fargo Bank, Coldwell Banker Real Estate, several gas stations and fast food stores. The area is serviced by Dingeman Elementary School, one of the highest-scoring schools in the county with a very high level of parent participation. This area of Scripps Ranch is also home to Cub Scout Pack 616, with 120 scouts is one of the largest in the state.
Today, a new area is being added. It is called Stonebridge Estates and won't be done for several more years.
Scripps Ranch is known for its 4th of July Parade, where local residential community groups, church groups and Scouts march in a parade that is reminiscent of small-town America. The parade includes a concert in the park and the annual 10k/Fun Walk/Bike ride that is sponsored by the Old Pros
